Big news for international fans of The Real Housewives franchise: South African streaming service Showmax has announced that not only has The Real Housewives of Durban been renewed for Season 2 but The Real Housewives of Lagos, Nigeria’s first entry into the franchise, will debut next year.
The Real Housewives of Lagos… coming soon
In a company blog post, Showmax revealed that The Real Housewives of Lagos will “take a peek inside the opulent lives of some of the most affluent women in Lagos and that it is the 16th international version of the The Real Housewives format and the third to be adapted in Africa after The Real Housewives of Johannesburg and The Real Housewives of Durban.
According to Wikipedia, Lagos is Nigeria’s largest city and the second most populous city in Africa and is credited with being one of the fastest-growing cities in the world.
The official hashtag and nickname for the series is RHOL.
The Real Housewives of Durban renewed for Season 2
In addition to the news that the franchise is expanding to Nigeria, The Real Housewives of Durban has also been renewed for Season 2 following a hugely successful launch on Showmax earlier this year. According to a company press release, The Real Housewives of Johannesburg was one of the 10 most streamed local series on Showmax in 2019 and as previously reported on TV Deets, RHODurban broke streaming records when it launched back in January 2021.
“We’ve seen audiences across Africa devour The Real Housewives of Johannesburg and The Real Housewives of Durban,” Showmax’s head of content, Candice Fanguiero, said in a statement. “The Real Housewives franchise lends itself to localization and we know our audience is going to love seeing the show reinvented Naija-style. We can’t wait to show the content — and the world — another side of Lagos, with all the drama, high fashion, and luxury you’d expect from The Real Housewives franchise.”
The RHODurban Season 1 cast (pictured) starred Annie Ludick, Nonkanyiso Conco (LaConco), Nonku Williams, Ayanda Ncwane, Sorisha Naidoo, and Kgomotso Ndungane but no news on who is returning for Season 2 just yet.
When will RHODurban Season 2 and RHOL Season 1 premiere?
While RHODurban is produced by Let It Rain Films, RHOL comes from Livespot 360 and both series will be available on Showmax in “early 2022,” the press release notes.
Internationally, fans of the franchise can catch both RHOJ and RHODurban on Hayu, so it would seem appropriate that RHOL will end up there after premiering on Showmax. As always, TV Deets will keep you posted with the latest.
