kykNET has dropped the first teaser for The Real Housewives of Pretoria, confirming an October premiere date for Season 1 at the same time.

According to a network press release, The Real Housewives of Pretoria — also known as RHOPTA — will be the first entry in the franchise to be produced for an Afrikaans audience and will debut on kykNET DStv channel 144 on October 13, 2022.

“It is a privilege to bring the famous international Real Housewives format to kykNET,” Waldimar Pelser, director of the kykNET channels, said in an official statement.

“The fact that this series is set in Pretoria rather than Lagos or Cape Town was always going to require us to approach it differently than the other series of Real Housewives produced around the world. We want to show our viewers a group of strong Afrikaans women from Pretoria who are big players in their families and communities, who are truly Afrikaans, and who of course also bring the swagger that Real Housewives is known for,” he continued. “These women live large. They know the beautiful things in life. This is a rare chance to get to know them intimately, and walk in their (high-heeled) shoes.”

Adds Nomsa Philiso, CEO of Programming: M-Net Channels: “We are excited to bring another version of the Real Housewives format to Africa. This is in line with our mission to provide a diverse offering to our customers and to continue to tell local stories as Africa’s most loved storytellers. The Real Housewives of Pretoria will bring nothing less than authentic entertainment and exciting content to viewers.”

While the network is keeping any storylines secret for now, RHOPTA fans can expect “an impromptu race in luxury vehicles, a dramatic hike, botox, hyenas, an action-packed trip to Zanzibar and lots of horses!”

“I am convinced that The Real Housewives of Pretoria will get the country buzzing and keep it buzzing,” teased Rian van Heerden, executive producer. “There are more than enough moments that will make you gasp for breath but also make you think twice about the traditional view that Pretoria is conservative and boring!”

As previously reported, The Real Housewives franchise is expanding with two new African-based series, The Real Housewives of Pretoria and The Real Housewives of Nairobi. Pretoria has already wrapped production on a thirteen episode first season while Nairobi is expected to complete filming by the end of the year.

While RHOPTA is now the fifth version of the Real Housewives format in Africa, it is the first made for an Afrikaans audience. The Season 1 cast is made up of Renske Lammerding, Marié Bosman, Talana Kuhn, Kiki La Coco, Mel Viljoen, and Rhona Erasmus.

The Real Housewives of Pretoria premieres Thursday, October 13 on kykNET DStv channel 144 and will be available simultaneously on Showmax.
