Corus has decided to cancel the Big Brother Canada live feeds for the upcoming Season 11, according to an official statement.
“Attention BBCAN fam! As we head into Season 11, Big Brother Canada’s Live Feeds are evolving,” the show’s official Twitter account posted. “Behind the scenes content will now be delivered through Digital Dailies – uncut footage from inside the BBCAN house, offering viewers an extended sneak peek into the houseguests’ lives.”
In a follow up tweet, the show linked to an official release from Corus expanding on the decision to cancel the Big Brother Canada live feeds for Season 11.
“We are known for giving audiences behind the scenes access to Big Brother Canada, and we’re excited to debut Digital Dailies this season. This new content offering came together after thoughtful consideration, with us taking a new approach to the BBCAN live feeds by offering an exclusive peek inside the house and moving away from the 24/7 live feeds,” said Lisa Godfrey, Senior Vice President, Original Content and Corus Studios, Corus Entertainment. “We are constantly looking for new ways to evolve the show to ensure we operate with the utmost duty of care and prioritize the mental health and well-being of the houseguests, and their family members, as well as our own production team who work closely on the series. We are happy to continue delivering the exclusive content we know audiences love, in a way that works best for our BBCAN family.”
Terrible decision on Corus’ part
While a “new approach” to the live feeds is actually an okay idea, the reality is that Corus has decided to completely cancel the live feeds for Season 11, which was sure to upset the Big Brother Canada fanbase — and should, quite frankly.
The live feeds are an instrumental part of the Big Brother format giving fans an unedited look at the drama in the house. Without the live feeds, the show arguably becomes more similar to many of the reality formats that are out there that are not Big Brother. The fact that Corus even released a statement about the cancellation of the live feeds shows that they know this would be a big change for fans and have decided to do it anyways.
The news was met with swift backlash on social media.
“oh yeah you guys lost the plot cause your edited show is horrific the live feeds were all that was watchable nobody is watching this,” tweeted one fan in response.
“Did yall forget what the name of the show is?” asked another, referencing the fact that the live feeds are an iconic part of the franchise.
Added another, “This is complete crap & will be the downfall of the series.”
“This takes away the fundamental premise of the social experiment,” another response read.
With so much backlash on social media and the show not debuting until next month, there is a possibility Corus could change course but until then, BBCAN will certainly feel different.
Season 11 of Big Brother Canada premieres March 8th on Global.
