Captain Sandy Yawn Apologizes For Joking About Malia White’s Sexuality In Now-Viral Cameo Video

'Below Deck Med' fans are not happy with Sandy.

Captain Sandy Yawn has apologized for joking about Malia White’s sexuality in a Cameo video that has since gone viral in what seems to be the latest entry of the never-ending drama surrounding Below Deck Med’s fifth season.

“I was wrong for making that comment, that clip was taken out of context,” she posted to her Instagram Story. “That clip was taken out of context, it was sliced to make it into something it was not. My apologies to Malia!”

Earlier in the day (September 22), a Cameo video of Captain Sandy leaked where she said that Malia was gay and that the production team behind Below Deck Med all knew about it.

Cameo is a video service that allows fans to request personal messages from some of their favourite reality stars, like Captain Sandy, for a fee.

Malia responds

Malia took to her Instagram to post a video statement after the video started making the rounds, denying that she is gay while expressing her disappointment with Captain Sandy and re-affirming her support for the LGBTQ+ community. She also addressed the backlash she herself has received for her behaviour on this season of Below Deck Med, including her involvement in Hannah Ferrier’s firing.

Understandably, the video has upset many fans of the franchise, with some going as far as to ask Bravo to fire Sandy over the situation. However, the network has failed to take action in other similar situations involving the gay community, like when it was discovered Real Housewives of Potomac star Candiace Dillard had posted homophobic statements on social media in the past. Not only that, but there are some fans who believe that what Captain Sandy said wasn’t actually that bad.

As previously reported, this is just the latest chapter in the Below Deck Med drama. At the start of the season, Bravo and production company 51 Minds publicly fired deckhand Peter Hunziker, and Captain Sandy later had a hand in Lara Flumiani, Hindrigo Lorran, and Hannah Ferrier all leaving the show before the end of production. The chaos has since resulted in some of the show’s highest ratings ever.

Below Deck Mediterranean airs Mondays on Bravo.
