Mary Fitzgerald And Romain Bonnet Confirm They Had A “Civil Union” Prior To Filming ‘Selling Sunset’ Season 1

We're not sure the defence they just shared with the press will be enough to silence their critics.

Mary Fitzgerald and Romain Bonnet have some explaining to do after it was discovered that they were actually married before filming Selling Sunset Season 1 and we’re not sure the defence they just shared with the press will be enough to silence their critics.

Mary and Romain had a civil union a couple of months before the show began filming in June of 2018, but they chose not to tell any of their friends or family, as they were still trying to see if their relationship would work out in the long term,” a representative for Mary told PEOPLE exclusively, confirming TMZ’s report from earlier Sunday (August 23).

Added the rep, “In their minds, they weren’t properly married until the wedding that was filmed during the show.”

As previously reported, TMZ has obtained Mary and Romain’s marriage license and revealed that the duo actually wed on March 9, 2018, months before their wedding was filmed on October 12, 2019 for Season 2.

During the Netflix reality show’s first season, Mary and Romain openly talked about the challenges in their relationship including Romain’s hesitancy to both get married and have children, and now, fans are left wondering how real the show really is.

Even some of their co-stars, namely Christine Quinn and Davina Potratz, doubted how genuine the relationship was, sacrificing both their friendships with their co-stars and some popularity with viewers while doing so.

Selling Sunset has not yet been renewed for Season 4 but if we had to take any bets, we would assume that the show has entered production or is about to with the amount of stories and leaks coming from the cast.

Just recently, creator Adam DiVello sat for an interview with Variety where he refused to talk about Christine and Davina, further indicating that there is some sort of divide on set.

Between Mary Fitzgerald and Romain Bonnet’s fake (?) marriage, Maya Vander condsidering leaving the company, and Brett Oppenheim having recently parted ways with his brother Jason Oppenheim, there is certainly no lack of story amongst the cast.

Selling Sunset Season 3 is on Netflix worldwide right now.
