The latest incident with Brandi Redmond follows a season where alleged racism was a part of The Real Housewives of Dallas’ central storyline.
Brandi Redmond has apologized for mocking people of Asian descent in a video leaked to social media.
The Real Housewives of Dallas were already on thin ice with Bravo due to low ratings and the fact that much of this season’s storyline focused on other inappropriate and racist comments made by Brandi’s co-star, LeeAnne Locken, and this new controversy does nothing but hurt the show’s chances at renewal.
Kary Brittingham, who is Mexican, joined the cast of The Real Housewives of Dallas just this year but never seemed to click with LeeAnne. While the Housewives were vacationing in Thailand, LeeAnne made statements that could be considered racist about Mexicans and the women have been seen taking her to task on the currently-airing reunion episodes.
Following last week’s reunion episode, a video was leaked on Twitter that shows Brandi mocking people of Asian descent and in a preview of the upcoming second part of the RHOD reunion, the women are asked whether LeeAnne is racist or not. The women seem to agree that LeeAnne is racist, and this video of Brandi was conveniently leaked around the same time that conversation aired.
But after seeing the leaked video of Brandi, which TV Deets has chosen not to share due to the insensitivity, some RHOD viewers are now turning their outrage from LeeAnne towards Brandi for what they see as equally inappropriate and out-of-line behaviour. The video in question was posted by Brandi to her own Instagram account, so there is no doubting the authenticity or the fact that she knew she was being recorded.
Brandi has since apologized for the video, noting that it was taken years ago and that at the time, she quickly deleted it.
“A video resurfaced of me from three years ago which at the time I had posted and quickly deleted and then immediately apologized for my insensitivity,” she Tweeted. “I would like to once again sincerely apologize for my offensive actions.”
Brandi did not apologize directly to the group she offended in her statement, which is exactly what LeeAnne did when called out for how she was behaving towards Kary. In general, the apology seems rushed and certainly not pre-approved.
This latest racist incident –and Brandi and LeeAnne’s refusal to understand what a real apology looks like and how to truly make amends in a situation like this — now has some RHOD fans asking for the show to be cancelled, and there seems to be a strong argument for doing so.
As a network, Bravo has to be pretty upset with the onslaught of negative publicity that both LeeAnne and Brandi are bringing the franchise. While the show is extremely cheap to produce when compared to some of the network’s other shows, Bravo will not appreciate being tied to another racist controversy and LeeAnne and Brandi may have put the show at risk of being renewed. If the show does return for another season, expect to see quite a few casting changes, at the very least.
But since this is The Real Housewives franchise we’re talking about, choosing to cancel RHOD is not a decision the network will be making lightly. 2020 may provide the perfect cover for doing so, however, with new shows including The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City set to debut.
