Abrupt ending to Season 8

As previously reported on TVDeets.com, BBCAN9 will be the first season since Big Brother Canada Season 8 was abruptly cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

BBCAN8 was quite the dramatic season for the franchise, with producers having to take additional precautions with the cast and crew due to the coronavirus pandemic, which was in its initial stage as the show started production.

Then, houseguest Jamar Lee was removed from the house after apparently threatening another contestant, and backlash against the decision started almost immediately on social media, with the show’s production team later addressing the criticism.

Just days later, the country was in a completely different spot in regards to the outbreak, and production on Season 8 was ceased, with all of the houseguests being sent home early.

Arisa Cox promoted to EP

This new season will reportedly feature an entirely new cast after casting was opened up after the end of Big Brother Canada Season 8, but host Arisa Cox will still be front and centre when the show premieres in a few weeks time.

In addition to her hosting duties, the longtime favourite host has also been promoted to Executive Producer.

“We have reached a turning point in history and as the fight against racism and issues facing Black, Indigenous and people of colour around the world have been pulled into the spotlight, Big Brother Canada is seizing this moment to become a leader in the reality TV world,” she said in a statement back in July 2020.

“Our top priority is bold, lasting change by embracing the rich diversity of Canada in front of and behind the camera,” she continued. “Both are vital. And as one of the biggest and best reality TV shows in the country, we have both the ability and the responsibility to do just that. I’m thrilled to join Erin and the producing team, and work together to ensure Big Brother Canada meets this moment.”

Cox joins John Brunton, Erin Brock, Eric Abboud, and Trevor Boris as Executive Producers. The show is produced by Insight Productions Ltd. in association with Corus Entertainment and Endemol Shine.

Big Brother Canada Season 9 premieres Wednesday, March 3 at 9pm ET on Global and will also be available on Stack TV.
