Andy Cohen: Expect Big Casting Changes To ‘The Real Housewives Of Orange County’

If we were one of Bravo’s Real Housewives of Orange County right about now, we wouldn’t exactly be sitting comfortable.

Ahead of last night’s RHOC reunion, Andy Cohen visited his good friend Jeff Lewis on his SiriusXM radio show to discuss all things Bravo. After two dud seasons in a row, fans have been calling for major changes to be made to the show and it looks like that’s exactly what is happening.

“The casting for next season is some of the best casting we’ve had,” he told Jeff, revealing that both Bravo and Evolution Media, the production company behind the show, are looking to make changes. He added that he “[has] not been this excited about casting” in quite a while.

RHOC currently stars Tamra Judge, Shannon Beador, Kelly Dodd, Emily Simpson, and Gina Kirschenheiter. Vicki Gunvalson has been appearing in a Friend of role but as we’ve previously reported, much of the season has focused around her.

Fans have been requesting casting changes to the show for years and while Evolution Media has certainly tried by, for example, bringing back former Housewives, the cast hasn’t really seemed to gel — and viewers can tell.

Braunwyn Windham-Burke is the newest cast member this season and would be the easiest one for Bravo to replace but that may not be in the cards if Andy has his way. Defending Braunwyn, he noted that she has a very full storyline. “You’ve got Dr. Deb, you’ve got the kids, you’ve got the other apartment,” he dished according to People. (Keep in mind that Andy is the Executive Producer on The Real Housewives of Orange County and has a vested interest in his casting choices succeeding. If he approved Braunwyn, he won’t be quick to drop her after just one season.)

Production on season 15 is expected to start early next year but it sounds like casting is already well on its way. Regardless of how it turns out, Andy promises that we’re in for yet another great season. “No matter how it shakes out, it’s going to be great because we have great casting,” he said. “It’s hard to make moves when you don’t have a bench, both on the show and casting wise.”

He pointed to two other cities as an example. “What I mean is, it’s like Bethenny [Frankel] leaving, it’s like [Lisa] Vanderpump leaving — there’s already a great bench of superstars,” he continued. “So ultimately, you’re upset that those people are leaving, you might have to make a hard call on Orange County, but there are great people on the show right now and there are great people waiting. You have to figure it out.”

After hearing what Andy has to say about the next season of RHOC, it sounds like we’re definitely in store for some much-needed and major changes to the cast.

While Housewives fans can be notoriously picky when it comes to things like this, Bravo has really no choice but to update the franchise with new cast members moving forward. Plus, a lot of these Housewives reportedly bring in some pretty large salaries and when you’re looking at making changes in the TV industry, one place to start is with the highest paid, which could explain why they were so eager to demote Vicki.

Personally, we’d be wary about replacing too many of the cast members but then again, Bravo made headlines a few years ago by firing four cast members on The Real Housewives of New York City and while the following seasons were rough, it did pave the way for a cast that most viewers seem to be pleased with now. While a lot may be up in the air, one thing is for sure: Expect to see a different RHOC in 2020.
